Call for Papers

Banaras, renowned for its socio-economic and religious significance worldwide, stands as the epitome of unique artistry, particularly in the realm of brocade weaving. Since centuries, Banaras has been a hub of unparalleled craftsmanship, with techniques like tanchoi, brocades, kimkhabs, calligraphy weaving and more passed down through generations. The city is also known for the intricate zardozi embroidery that is done using metallic threads. All textile enthusiasts have either possessed or appreciated these masterpieces.

Thus, the Textiles and Clothing Research Center (TCRC), in collaboration with Bharat Kala Bhawan (BHU), JÑĀNA- PRAVĀHA, and the Indian Institute of Crafts & Design (IICD) Jaipur, is organizing a two-day seminar on November 22nd – 23rd, 2024, in Banaras / Varanasi, dedicated to unravelling the materials, techniques, conservation, and untold stories behind these opulent textiles. The theme for the seminar is ‘Celebrating Banaras: The Artistry and Tradition of its Textiles’.

Beyond enriching keynotes and paper presentations, participants will have the opportunity to explore the living heritage of Banaras with exclusive excursions to see master weavers, zari makers and other artisans, who inherit the skills of Banaras textile crafts and continue to preserve and enrich these ancient crafts. The seminar aims to bring together academicians, textile professionals, research scholars, textile enthusiasts, museum curators, and other stakeholders to present their original work that has not been previously published. We welcome abstracts for 15-minute presentations exploring various facets of Banarasi textiles, encompassing a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:

• Evolution of the textile industry in Banaras, history of its textiles.
• Banaras as a trade centre; Commerce of Banaras.
• Artisanal techniques in weaving, its significance and symbolism of Banarasi textiles.
• Historical storytelling, social and cultural aspects of the family legacy through Banaras weaves
• Preservation, conservation, and museological aspects of Banarasi textiles.
• Technological advancements, contemporary innovations and sustainability in brocade weaving practices.
