Sustainable living is an important ideology in the modern world but it is reflected in traditional crafts of India since ancient times. Our prehistoric textile practices truly signify traditions, subsistence living, use of indigenous resources applies 3 R’s principle of reducing, reuse and recycle as well as eco-friendly in their production and consumption processes. Several of the traditional Indian textiles are created with a sustainable process like; natural dyeing, dabbu printing, kalamkari, are the few. Similarly, some famous sustainable and very attractive crafts are made through the use of old and discarded clothes like- ‘kantha’, ‘appliqué’, ‘quilts’ etc. The sari, dhoti like draped garments are the perfect example of no waste approaches. In this issue, we’ll explore the concept of sustainability, its basic elements; economic, social, and environmental sustainability and their socio-cultural significance concerning sustainable materials, production processes, impact, usage, and method of application in textiles and clothing.
