Textile Traditions in India: North-Eastern Region
The aim of TCRC as a society is to work towards the collection and dissemination of knowledge in the area of Textiles and Clothing while collaborating with other researchers in this field of study.
TCRC is publishing bi-annual e-Journals; the theme of this issue is ‘Textile Traditions in India: North-Eastern Region’. The Northeast India has a magnificent and significant place in indigenous culture of India. Generally they belong to same Mongoloid group but have multi diversity culture in terms of language, rituals, festivals and clothing etc.
between the hilly and the valley areas of Northeast India. Nevertheless each ethnic group has its own varied vibrant set of traditions, mythology, history and social structure. Textile and clothing are probably prevailingly distinguishable cultural facets, which show the
similarities as well as the disparity among the ethnic group. This helps in showcasing the ethnic identity of that particular ethnic group. Every ethnic group has its own design and colour combination. Various motifs and designs of textiles have relationship with the rituals and religious life of the people of North-east India. The weaving method
and material also vary according to the ethnic group and the region. This issue aimed at to explore the various types of textile and clothing of North-east region, etymology of garments; use of textiles and clothing in their festivals and rituals, directory of museum having Northeast textile and clothing as their collection, rare materials used for making these textiles, weaving and dyeing practice specific to any region or ethnic group, or any other traditional aspect highlighting the textile tradition of North-Eastern Region.
